City of Palatka Vice Mayor Mary Lawson Brown, with the
support of the Palatka City Commission, will hold a
community meeting to discuss the creation of a
Community Garden on Monday, June 29,
2009 at City HallThe meeting will begin at 12:00 p.m.
The
purpose of the meeting will be to determine the community’s
interest in forming and working a “community garden.”A community garden is a piece of land gardened by a
group of people.Community or neighborhood gardens have been
successful in other cities throughout Florida and the US.According to Vice Mayor Brown, “Many people are
struggling to put food on the table.“I see this as a way to help people get through these
tough economic times. This is a way for the average citizen, churches and
civic groups to participate in feeding themselves and their
families while beautifying neighborhoods and preserving
green space.We
have a lot of land throughout the City where nothing but
grass grows; we can turn those lots into agricultural
gardens that will provide citizens with exercise,
recreation, education and food.”
Anyone
can participate in this meeting. If you are part of an agriculture-based organization,
or are interested in volunteering to work in the garden,
please attend this meeting.Anyone who is interested in sponsorship, providing
resources or land, and all area churches, civic and school
or community-based youth organizations are invited and
encouraged to attend. For more information, please contact Betsy Driggers,
City Clerk, City of Palatka at 386-329-0100 ext. 211.
